Update on Rusty and stuff

I guess I should have posted to update everyone on Rusty's accident. It was a little crazy that week in Salt Lake and I didn't have internet access.

Rusty broke his neck on Wednesday, Jan 24th. He had surgery on Friday and they wanted to send him home by Saturday. His temperature was up and his oxygen saturation was low, so they kept him until Sunday. On Sunday morning it was like everything just improved at once. I think he had a lot of people praying for him. I think he was blessed in many ways including not being killed or paralyzed. He still has two fingers and a thumb that are numb up to his elbow. They can move just fine but feel kind of numb and tingly. The first time he was able to get out of bed at the hospital, he used the bathroom and went to wash his hands. He was kind of freaked out because he couldn't feel the water on those two fingers and thumb up to the elbow. He said it was a weird sensation. Hopefully that will all get better with time.

Today both Rusty and Paige had an appointment with the orthapaedic doctor. Paige got her cast off!! Yeah!!! Her arm is still bent. The doctor said that since she is so little, her arm will straighten out on its own. If she had been an adult when she broke her arm, they would have needed to do surgery. Right after they took off the cast Paige started scratching her arm and rubbing it on the floor. She scratched so much it started to bleed. We had to put some antibiotic ointment and a gauze wrap on it before we left the doctor's office. Tonight she wanted me to take the wrap off and she seems to be leaving it alone now.

Rusty's appointment was to check his head, shoulder, knee and toe (sing along). Well, just not the toe. They think the problems with his shoulder and arm have to do with the nerve that is between his broken neck bones. It should take care of itself eventually. His knee is bruised on the bone and he just has to wait that out too. The head thing is, once again, something that will just get better with time. Rusty has only had a couple headaches since the accident. They said that some people have headaches for life with injuries like that. He also has had some ringing in his ears.

Rusty has an appointment with the neuro surgeon in Salt Lake on March 1st. So until then I guess he gets to wear the lovely neckbrace he loves so much. The doctor at the hospital in Salt Lake told him that whenever he gets sick of the neck brace to look down and wiggle his toes and be dang glad that he can still do that.

Josh went to youth court last week for the vending machine incident. His sentence was: one page paper on how his actions effect others around him, especially his little brother, a letter of apology to the principal of the school (he already apologized in person the principal and asst.), and two minute presentation on theft in front of the youth court when he goes back. Josh's friend, Stetson, had put money in the machine before and had not gotten his item, so I guess they figured it was okay to shake the machine on this day and get something that was about to fall. Then two things fell so Josh took the other thing. I guess we live and learn.

Wyatt played his last basketball game of the season on Saturday. This was the first time he actually got a little agressive. He has kind of held back all this time. This was also the first game they lost. But now he decided he might want to play again next year.

Sarah did something tonight she hasn't done in quite a while. She started the car!!! Arrgh!!! I told her that I was taking her toys away until further notice-all of them. She hasn't figured out yet that they are in the garage. I will have to hide them in the camper or something. In my parenting class they told us to try and make consequences be like the consequences an adult would have in the real world for the same infraction. I've been trying to think what would happen if I just went and started someones car without their permission. Any suggestions out there? Bring them on. I told her I haven't decided on all her consequences yet. I thought that not getting her "poopy baby" for her birthday would have cured her of this, but it only worked for a few months.

And then there's me. My days are so busy! Paige has been kind of whiny especially at night. She follows me around whining for me to pick her up. (now I know on a really small scale how Danielle feels). Tonight I went in the bathroom to go pee. You would think that would buy me two minutes alone, but no, I had Sarah and Paige both banging on the door trying to get in or for me to come out. I really love motherhood, but once in a while it would be great to go somewhere quiet and read a book or something and not have one to five voices asking, telling, whining, laughing, yelling etc. Some day I will probably look back and miss all the noise. Probably. Maybe that's what Enrichment night is for. To give us back our sanity.

Anyway, enough for now. Time to go to bed. Paige is sitting on my lap and just yawned a huge yawn. A couple more sentences and she will probably be asleep. Oh they are so sweet when they are sleeping! And she's out!

Good night.
